About Caps and Turbans

My custom caps are made with double thickness of polar fleece. So, where the fabric covers your ears, you'll have four layers of polar fleece to keep you warm!

What makes my hats different from others you'll find on the web?

  • I size your hat a little bit larger then a small piece of elastic and an adjustible tie help to cinch the cap to snug fit at the back seam.
  • The top of both the caps and the turbans are oval shaped (like the top of your head), not round.
And, then, I'm a survivor, like you're going to be, and I'm thinking about you when I make your caps and turbans.

graphic of head measurementsFor sizing, you'll need to take two measurements:
A) The measurement around your head from your forehead to the back of the head (you just want to double-check what could be the largest dimension).
B) The measurement around your head from your forehead (where you want the cap to 'sit') around to the nape of your neck.
Whichever of these measurements is the largest will be used to determine the size of your custom hat.

My custom turbans have two layers of polor fleece on the top oval. The band or bands (can be made without a seam for prints or on request) has a double thickness on the fold, but only one thickness where the brim meets the oval. The turban is sized several inches over the head measurement, but gathered with elastic at the back. There is also an additional elastic tab to cinch for a snug fit at the back seam.

As this service is just starting up, I have next to no inventory. But, I make your custom caps and turbans to order and can get them out the door in two days. So, please contact me with your color preferences and size and let's talk about caps and turbans!

About Darbie

During the summer of 2005, I was, apparently, developing blood clots in my lower legs. This was the presenting symptom of ovarian cancer. My cancer was found during an ultrasound for my blood clots (not because anybody was looking for the cause of the blood clots!). I had a complete hysterectomy in September and began a course of chemotherapy with carbol and taxol. Of course, I lost all of my hair.

That's when I started making polar fleece caps. While I preferred the look of turbans, at the time, I had not figured out a good pattern with which to make them. I found that, even once my hair grew out, my head still felt cold. So, I have continued to wear caps and turbans.

Sadly, once my hair grew back in, my nice snug fitting caps were a little too small. When I started making more caps for this winter, it occurred to me that I should make them slightly adjustable and available to others who, like me, have struggled with the concept of "bald is beautiful."

I hope you're interested in my hats and turbans (photos will be appearing soon, I promise!)
